Sustainable Aquaculture Research Networks for Sub Saharan Africa - A new era for strengthening African aquaculture development.


More people and ever less fish to eat – a common challenge for people all over Africa.

Would you like to know how Clarias catfish are currently being cultured in Nigeria? Who is researching tilapia feeds and nutrition in South Africa? Why Egypt is the seconnd biggest global producer of farmed tilapia behind China ? Or how private fish hatcheries are developing in Ghana and Zambia?

The EC funded 3 year SARNISSA project completed its funding back in 2011 but continues to run and grow with by Dec 2014 over 2300 persons registered and sharing information and contacts on a daily basis

The three-year project has repeatedly initiated collaborations and alliances between languages and across borders among experienced and emergent players in the African and wider aquaculture scene building on this now comprehensive knowledge resource base and exchange platform.

The project focus after 5 years is still very much based on initiating regular communication among stakeholders ( commercial. research and market sectors, government agencies, NGOs, and others) in order that collaborations can be initiated and nurtured. These have already been between researchers and commercial users, between anglophone and francophone regions, between Africa and Asia; and between Europe and Africa.

The provision and access to relevant and up to date information and contacts is helping these special entrepreneurial individuals to build a sustainable and financially viable African aquaculture sector with so much promise for the future.
