Hi All,

My name is Tom Messenger, and in 2008 I completed my National Diploma in Ornamental Fisheries Management at Sparsholt College, England. Since then, I have completed another National Diploma in Photography, finishing July this year. I have recently become aware of the growth of aquaculture throughout Africa particularly with Tilapia and Catfish, and I am very interested in getting involved both to gain experience in the field and to help out where I can. I would just like to ask if there may be any opportunities for people like myself to get involved in this kind of work? I have limited practical experience having only recently completed college, but I am very keen to learn and help out where I can. I would be very grateful if you may have any information that might help.

Many thanks,
Tom

Advice on setting up new Tilapia Fish Farm with Tanks in Zimbabwe

Hi All
i am new to aquaponics and really keen to start a project to farm Tilapia in the southern part of Zimbabwe. I would want to start off small / subsistance but expand as knowledge is gained. i have good water supply and would want to use cement tanks (or alternative durable alternatives) to house the fish. tanks will be more secure and i would also want to gravity feed waste from tanks onto vegetable garden (there is a gentle gradeint on the land) . my problem are
1. im struggling to find the info on just how to construct / setup the tanks etc
2. i cant find how big a tank must be and how many fish it must accomodate
3.what my additional requirements might be machinery / pumps etc .. 4.once the fish are in the tanks is that where they stay for till culled/ killed
5 what time does it take from fingerling to ideal size
6. is there particular vegetables i could grow to supplement the fish with ?
7. how often would water need to be renewed
8. ideally some idea of the basic construction / layout of a small subsistance fish project
these are just a few of the questions ... mainly though i need to find out a layout and demensions of a subsistance fish farm then will go from there
so any help on this would be greatly appreciated
look forward to hearing from someone
regards

Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (EUS) IN THE ZAMBEZI

I am looking for information on the incidence of the Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (EUS) along the Zambezi Valley since 2007 as I have came across literature that says the disease was first identified around 2007 in the Upper Zambezi and Chobe Rivers affecting fisheries in Botswana, Namibia and Zambia. I am more concerned on the "silence" over the progress/lack of it of this disease as the basin concerned supports over an approximate 134 indeginous species that support one of the most significant freshwater fisheries in the region. The Zambezi basin serves as a very vital source of livelihoods for countless fishing communities and knowledge of the levels and impact of this EUS will help in strategising counter measures to mitigate the spread of the disease and its prevalence. Private business intending to start aquaculture operations also need to be fully aware of the incidence of this disease and its possible impact and implications to their ventures prior to investments.

Any comments? I am willing to learn more on this disease. As a country Zimbabwe is facing many challenges to the extent that monitoring of this disease is non-existent from the state's departments.

Thank you.

My kindest regards.

Good morning

At Rivendell Hatchery, here near Grahamstown, South Africa we have a program to produce quality O. mossambicus broodstock and seed for aquaculture , due to the conservation restrictions on using exotic O. niloticus. I know a lot of people are using 17alpha Methylstestosterone to produce all-male seed for sale but we want to try the YY production of this species, using feminization techniques. We are having problems sourcing DES (diethystilbestrol) to do this. Can anyone give us some info on where this is obtainable, either as pure synthetic hormone or as a ready-made feed?

Our mossambicus strain grows to over 2.3kg, has excellent body-shape comparable to the best niloticus, can survive down to 9.5C in winter, and, most importantly, grows fast at sub-optimal temps of 18-25C during summer...surely a good aquaculture candidate species...?

regards
